STUDENT ENGAGMENT

Civic Engagement:

We need to expect more not just from ASU, but from ourselves.  Our generation and particularly students have a voice that needs to be heard.  Unfortunately, there are members of the Arizona legislature who have attempted to pass legislation to limit the votes of students to their home districts.

Our ticket is committed to making elections easy for students to participate and vote.  High voter participation in Tempe will be a signal to elected officials that supporting higher education funding is essential to reducing the cost of college for all of us.

More than #1 in Innovation.

#1 in Voter Turnout.

“Lets debate policies not people”

Expect More is expecting an active and passionate political climate during the 2020 election cycle. USG ought to be the moderators of civil dialogue on ASU’s campus. We are committed to increasing ASU’s civic engagement and making sure students are well informed on current events and candidate policies. In collaboration with the Civic Engagement Coalition, we will host student debates and give ALL students a platform for their political views.

Here are a few ways we plan to engage students next year:

  • Host a Senatorial Debate with Mark Kelly and Martha McSally

  • In 2016, 59% of ASU students voted in the presidential election. The number to beat is 67%.

  • Advocate for additional polling sites on campus

    • Utilize the Safety Escort Service to drive students to polling sites near campus on election day.

  • Voter registration is more than a single day event, it is a year long mission.

    • Currently, USG owns iPads specifically for voter registration that are rarely charged and almost never used

    • We pledge our commitment to year-long voter registration by working collaboratively with the Civic Engagement Coalition in these efforts instead of outsourcing responsibility.

    • Expect More pledges to utilize iPads previously purchased by USG to ALWAYS have materials prepared for students to register to vote in our office.

  • Provide a Voter Resource Guide for Students

Expect More for DREAMers:

Governor Ducey has already taken action to support Arizona’s DREAMers. The State already invests 125k to educate DREAMers from k-12, however, tuition for DREAMers is 150% of undergraduate resident tuition. This is a huge problem that impacts our ASU community as a whole and it is an issue that goes all the way up to the State Legislature and the Arizona Board of Regents. Expect More pledges to support these students through both advocacy and funding.

  • We pledge to expand the funding necessary for student advocacy groups to lobby on Capital Hill and at the State Legislature on behalf of DREAMers.

    • This includes travel funding and USG sponsored club appropriations necessary for these organizations to host impactful events

The Expect More Ticket firmly defends EVERY student’s right to Free Speech:

  • Free Speech can be regulated in the time, place or manner of constitutionally protected speech occurring in a public forum.

  • Threatening behavior, intimidation, and discrimination will NOT be tolerated from ANY organization by Expect More ticket.

    • We will introduce regulations to ensure that clubs and organizations cannot host events for these sole purposes.

    • We recognize student’s right to organize and protest

  • Expand USG funding for “We Rise: Undocumented Scholarship Benefit Dinner”

Currently, 45% of AZ adults have a 2-4 year degree or industry certificate.

Expect More has taken the “Achieve60AZ” pledge and we commit our actions next year to advancing this goal.

“By the year 2030, 60% of Arizonans WILL have a degree or certificate.”

Expect More Student Engagement:

We believe that University Boards and Committees (UBCs) deserve stronger support by USG. Our representatives deserve to have their voices heard and their ideas implemented. Currently, UBC’s are under utilized and under supported by USG and this is evident in their 20% retention rate. As a ticket, we are committed to select students that represent the student body and to retain them for the entire year. Our mission is to create decisions for the students, by the students, so that we can become a student-led university.

What to Expect :

  • Selecting representatives that have experience advocating for students and programming on campus.

  • Host a Fall and Spring Retreat for all of the UBC representatives to build a community amongst our boards and committees.

  • Schedule bi-monthly meetings between the representatives and their campus President to facilitate open dialogue, feedback and support.

  • Create pathways for ideas generated in the UBCs to be given to the right personal so they can be implemented.

  • Provide clear a vision and guidelines for the UBCs to ensure year-long investment.
